It was incredible, but it seemed that there was always something burning here. This time it was only a little stick, all that remained from a large tree that had been consumed by the flames. You could tell because the little ash mound that remained where the tree had been, was a different color, and because this different colored ash trailed off into shapes like branches, ending just before the little burning stick.
The whole ground was covered with a thick carpet of soft ash that rained from the nearby volcano. It made the whole place a nightmare. The sun was raging and there didn't seem to be much cover anywhere. It kept everything withered so the smallest spark would set it aflame and the fire only made matters worse. At least it didn't have where to spread to.
Cougar, even though accustomed to the merciless desert, couldn't go any further with this heat. He stayed behind a large rock for shade and the burning breeze kicking ash on your eyes.
